FEASTS OF THE WEEK:

STs PETER & PAUL:

The Feast of Peter and Paul is traditionally celebrated on 29th June but is marked this Sunday. (This week also marks the close of the Year of Paul, which has commemorated the 2000th anniversary of Paul’s birth). Peter and Paul are our two most illustrious yet very different saints: St. Peter, the humble fisherman, who showed very human weaknesses to deny Christ at testing moments - yet to whom was entrusted “the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven” and hence his role as founder of the papacy; St.Paul, who as Saul was the harshest of persecutors of Christianity - until his encounter with the vision of Christ on the road to Damascus which led to his conversion and on to his role as tireless missionary and powerful thinker and writer on behalf of the infant church.

ST. OLIVER PLUNKETT:

We celebrate the Feast of St. Oliver Plunkett on Wednesday 1st July. He was born near Dublin in 1625. He studied at the Irish College and became a professor of theology before his appointment as Archbishop of Armagh in 1669. Despite operating in Penal times, he managed to achieve good relations with the local Protestant clergy and civil leaders over a period of nine years, earning their high regard. He nevertheless became a victim of the wider political picture, and was arrested supposedly for plotting armed insurrection. He was imprisoned in London, and was eventually tried for treason and executed at Tyburn in 1681.

PLANNED GIVING:

For the last few weeks I’ve written about Planned Giving through the weekly envelope scheme. Now we move on to the second method which is the Standing Order. This is where you instruct your bank to pay a regular monthly or quarterly payment directly into the parish bank account. This has advantages for the parish in that the payments continue even when the donor is away, for instance on holiday. And it has advantages for you in that you do not have to remember to fill your weekly envelope. The amount you give and the frequency is entirely up to you and is confidential. A special form is available should you wish to take up this method. If you would like to know more or would like to start a Standing Order, please contact David Savage on 380626.

ST. WERBURGH’S & ST.COLUMBA’S SCHOOL SUMMER FAIR – PLANT STALL:

The PTA is preparing for the Annual Summer Fair on Saturday 4th July and would appreciate the help and generosity of any gardeners; as you are planting seeds, potting up and taking cuttings for your garden, we would be very grateful if you could spare a plant or two for the Plant Stall. Also, if you have any empty plant pots you no longer require, we will gladly take them off your hands! Empty pots can be dropped off at school any time, and any plants you can donate may be delivered to school on the day of the Fair. For details, contact Lal Cook on 01244 317550.

PILGRIMAGE OF REPARATION AND CONSECRATION:

A Pilgrimage of Reparation and Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary will take place at the National Shrine of St Pio, Pantasaph, Holywell on Saturday July 25th. The theme of the Day is praying for Priests and vocations to the Priesthood and religious life. It begins at 10 a.m. with a welcome in the Pilgrims Hall, followed by Stations of the Cross, Adoration in the Church, The Rosary with the crowning of the statue. The Day concludes with Mass at 4.00 p.m.

Lunch will be at 1.15 p.m. and if attending you are requested to bring along a packed lunch, tea and coffee will be available.

SPONSERED WALK FOR CAFOD:

Some of our recently confirmed young people are doing a sponsored walk in aid of CAFOD this week-end; they would appreciate extra sponsorship from members of our parish. If you would like to sponsor them please fill in the form located in the back porch of the church.

SVP COLLECTION:

There will be a SVP Collection on the weekend 4th/5th July. We thank you for your continual support.

PRO-LIFE PETITION DAY:

The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children will be staging a Child Protection Petition Day at this church on 4/5 July, to stop secondary schools being used as abortion referral centres. There are a number of concerns:

(1) school nurses/advisers are being given a clear remit to refer abortions without informing parents.

(2) the government is insisting that information on how to get an abortion is included in sex education lessons.

(3) It wants to establish school-based sexual health clinics in secondary schools.

Many schoolgirls will be persuaded to do something they could regret for ever. SPUC is aiming to gather half a million signatures and bring pressure to bear on the Government to reverse its policy. Please sign the petition and help protect schoolchildren, families and the unborn.
