That the Word of God be better known, accepted and lived as the one true source of freedom and joy.

That Christians in Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar may place their trust in the Holy Spirit and so maintain the courage to proclaim the Gospel in spite of their difficulties.

COFFEE AFTER MASS:

Tea and coffee are served in the Hall after the Sunday morning Masses. All are welcome.

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN UPTON:

At the AGM of Churches Together in Upton held recently, two members of St Columba’s were re-elected, Margaret Allmark as Chairman and David Savage as Honorary Treasurer. The next social event is a Quiz Night in aid of the Hospice of the Good Shepherd to be held at the URC on Friday, 30th October. Why not put together a team and come along for an enjoyable evening?

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL:

The Council met last week and the minutes are displayed on the notice boards.

The Council is holding its AGM on Sunday 11th October at 7 p.m. in the Hall and you are invited to attend.

The Pastoral Council has been operating for several years develops and coordinates a number of activities within the parish including the Liturgy Group which arranges services and provides readers and Bidding Prayers and the Social Awareness Group which provides trained support for the bereaved. In the past year it has provided the impetus for the establishment of a Buildings Committee with close links to the diocesan team with the aim of providing local support for the maintenance and development of the parish buildings including the Church itself, the Hall and the Presbytery. Of particular interest in this area is the question of what to do about the reinstatement of the ‘garage’ after its damage by a runaway car. Should it be merely reinstated as a storage area or is there an opportunity improve and refurbish it as meeting or social room? If you are interested in pastoral matters in the parish come along to the AGM on Sunday 11th October and have your say.

NEW VESTMENTS:

Fr. Cooke wishes to replace some Mass Vestments and if you wish to contribute to this please put your donation in an envelope marked ‘Vestments’. Thank you in anticipation.

CAFOD’S HARVEST FAST DAY:

This weekend we are distributing the CAFOD envelopes in readiness for the Fast Day on Friday 2nd October. As we give thanks for our own harvest, we will be thinking of people in the Third World whose harvests may have failed. We would therefore ask you to kindly put your harvest gift in the envelopes, which can be placed in the normal collection baskets at Masses next weekend. CAFOD works hard to reach those in need across the world, but is very concerned that, as a result of the financial downturn, aid is worth almost a third less than last year, They hope that tax payers could “Gift Aid” their donations, as CAFOD can gain a further 28p from every £1 donated.

OFFERTORY ENVELOPES - ‘PEEL & SEAL’:

This year’s envelopes, the green ones, have a ‘peel & seal’ flap. The advantage of this is that the contents of the envelope are more secure and money is prevented from falling out into the collection basket, making it impossible for it to be recorded for possible tax recovery. However, the strip needs to be removed to make the seal effective. A number of envelopes are being received where this has not been done. May I ask for your cooperation in ensuring the flap is properly sealed. Should you be having any problems with your envelopes please contact David Savage on 380626. And, may I thank all of you who contribute through the envelopes for your continuing generosity.

R.C.I.A. GROUP (A Journey in Faith for Enquirers and others):

The parish group, which supports those enquiring about being received into the Church, will begin meeting again on Thursdays, commencing Thursday 1st October, at 7.30 p.m. in the Church Office. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in joining, with a view to either being received or supporting the work of the group, please contact Fr .Cooke or Eileen Hordley (342048) to discuss. You would be most welcome.
