A CELEBRATION OF THE PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK:

Bishop Brian invites all members of the diocesan family who work in healthcare to a special celebration on Sunday 28th February here at St Columba’s. Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. followed by some light refreshments. Bishop Brian hopes that as many as possible of those who work in our hospitals, hospices, surgeries and clinics - whether paid or in a voluntary capacity - will be able to join in acknowledging Christ at work in the healing work that we participate in. This will also be an opportunity to meet old friends and colleagues and make some new ones.

With your support we will be able to build up the fund to meet the current and future needs of our sick and retired priests.

If you use the weekly offertory envelopes then please write your envelope number on the special envelope and this will enable tax to be recovered where appropriate. Thank you for your support.

With every blessing

PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK

In his Lenten Pastoral Letter Bishop Brian refers to our “strong tradition of recognising the significance of illness, and reaching out to those who are sick and infirm.” The Bishop encourages us in our parishes to “take stock of the care given to the sick and housebound to create an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the care we give as well as improving its quality.”

With regard to the quality of the care we can give, the chaplains at our Countess of Chester and Bowmere hospitals are working together on ways to improve the links between chaplaincy at the hospitals and the faith communities they serve. Part of this initiative is to provide clear and concise information in parishes, by way of a pamphlet, about the structure and working practices of the chaplaincy team and how all people can access them.

Bishop Brian asks particularly that we consider “how seriously we take provision for the celebration of the Sacrament of the Sick.” In these days of hospital chaplaincy without the presence of a resident Roman Catholic priest, it is most important that Catholic patients, their families and friends are fully informed about how to ensure provision of the Sacrament at the appropriate time. The information pamphlet will address this issue also.

Being better informed about how our loved ones can receive the pastoral care they need when in hospital, can be part of the quality of care we achieve in our parish, and fulfil our Bishop’s hopes for us. Look out for future announcements on this subject and for the pamphlets which will be available soon.
