•           Our Junior and Infant schools: Acresfield, Upton Heath, Mill View, Westlea,  & Dorin Park. Also schools in Newton, Guilden Sutton, Mickle Trafford and St Werburgh’s & St Columba’s.  For the teachers and pupils, that they will be open to the Christian teaching they receive.  For our local clergy as they lead assemblies.

THE POPE’S PRAYER INTENTIONS:

This month the Pope asks us to pray:

•           That the Word of God be better known, accepted and lived as the one true source of freedom and joy.

•           That Christians in Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar may place their trust in the Holy Spirit and so maintain the courage to proclaim the Gospel in spite of their difficulties.

COFFEE AFTER MASS:

Tea and coffee are served in the Hall after the Sunday morning Masses.  All are welcome.

NEW VESTMENTS:

Fr. Cooke has been having a sacristy clear-out and would like to buy some new vestments.  If people would like to make a donation towards the costs, please put your gift into an envelope and mark it “Vestments”.

ST THERESE – THE LITTLE FLOWER:

The relics of St Therese have come to this country and will be going to a number of places.  At Carmel, in Birkenhead, on 26th & 27th Sept. there will be celebrations.  Although the relics will NOT be going to Birkenhead, it is an opportunity to unite in prayer with the various celebrations.

ONE DOWN . . .

At the AGM of Churches Together in Upton held recently, two members of St Columba’s were re-elected, Margaret Allmark as Chairman and David Savage as Honorary Treasurer.  The next social event is a Quiz Night in aid of the Hospice of the Good Shepherd to be held at the URC on Friday, 30th October.  Why not put together a team and come along for an enjoyable evening?

…AND ONE TO GO:

St. Columba’s Pastoral Council is holding its AGM on Sunday 11th October at 7 p.m. in the Hall.  The Pastoral Council has been operating for several years, and develops and coordinates a number of activities within the parish including the Liturgy Group which arranges services and provides Readers and Bidding Prayers, and the Social Awareness Group which provides trained support for the bereaved.  In the past year it has provided the impetus for the establishment of a Buildings Committee with close links to the diocesan team with the aim of providing local support for the maintenance and development of the parish buildings.  Of current interest in this area is the reinstatement of the ‘garage’ after its damage by a runaway car:  should it be merely reinstated as a storage area or is there an opportunity improve and refurbish it as meeting or social room?  If you are interested in pastoral matters in the parish please come along to the AGM and have your say.

HARVEST THANKSGIVING MASS:

Next Sunday (27th Sept.) we will be having our Harvest Thanksgiving Mass at 11.00 a.m. As we give thanks for our own harvest, we will be thinking of people especially in the Third World whose harvests may have failed. We would ask you to kindly put your harvest gift in the CAFOD Harvest Fast Day envelopes, available with the Church Newsletters next weekend in readiness for the Harvest Fast Day on Friday 2nd Oct. The envelopes will be collected in the normal collection baskets at Masses on 3rd and 4th Oct.

OFFERTORY ENVELOPES  - ‘PEEL & SEAL’:

This year’s envelopes, the green ones, have a ‘peel & seal’ flap.  The advantage of this is that the contents of the envelope are more secure and money is prevented from falling out into the collection basket, making it impossible for it to be recorded for possible tax recovery.  However, the strip needs to be removed to make the seal effective.  A number of envelopes are being received where this has not been done.  May I ask for your cooperation in ensuring the flap is properly sealed.  Should you be having any problems with your envelopes please contact David Savage on 380626.  And, may I thank all of you who contribute through the envelopes for your continuing generosity.

R.C.I.A. GROUP (A Journey in Faith for Enquirers and others):

The parish group, which supports those enquiring about being received into the Church, will begin meeting again on Thursdays, commencing Thursday 1st October, at 7.30 p.m. in the Church Office. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in joining, with a view to either being received or supporting the work of the group, please contact Fr .Cooke or Eileen Hordley (342048) to discuss. You would be most welcome.
