ENVELOPES FOR NOVEMBER HOLY SOULS MONTH:
Envelopes are now available for remembrance at Mass in the month of the Holy Souls. Please put names of people to be especially remembered during November together with your Mass offering in the envelope.
PASTORAL COUNCIL AGM:
The AGM was held last Sunday evening. The minutes will be displayed on the notice board in due course. A number of interesting matters were raised concerning social events, the Book of the Gospels, Gift Aid and others. All of these will be considered by the Pastoral Council over its next few meetings. Many thanks to those of you who attended and took part and enormous thanks to Alison and Paul Wrigglesworth who provided refreshments.

READERS:
A Day of Recollection with Fr. Geoff O’Grady has been organised for existing Readers on Saturday, 31st October 2009 10 a.m. – 3.30 p.m. at St. Columba’s. Please make effort to attend. Further details will be posted on the front and back Porches as soon as available.
UPTON CHURCHES PRAYERS DIARY:

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN UPTON:
The next social event is a Quiz Night in aid of the Hospice of the Good Shepherd to be held at the URC on Friday, 30th October. Why not put together a team and come along for an enjoyable evening?
CHESTER CITY OF SANCTUARY - WANTED:
• Unused medication – to send to African Missionary Hospitals.
• Women and Children’s clothing for refugees in the UK.
These are joint initiatives with global inclusion and intercare, with the support of the Justice & Peace Network. Contact Gina Phillips on 0151 355 4008, global.inclusion@yahoo.co.uk who will arrange for collection.
CHESTER THEOLOGY SOCIETY:
The first lecture this year is to be held on 28th October at 7.30 p.m. in the Beswick Building at the University. The speaker will be Dr Terry Veling (Australian Catholic University, Brisbane) on: The Golden Rule and the Great Commandment: What Does “As Yourself” Mean in the Verse, “Love Your Neighbour As Yourself”? All welcome. Admission £2.50.
CAFOD HARVEST FAST DAY:
Thank you for your very generous offerings for Harvest Fast Day on 2nd October. A total of £704 was raised and has now been sent on to CAFOD.
A big “Thank you” also to everyone who helped with the coffee morning after last Sunday’s Masses, run by the Third World Group. The delicious range of homemade cakes helped us raise a total of £173.
CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION:
Each year our local churches hand-deliver a Christmas card to every home in Upton, and we invite our young church-goers (up to age 11) to help by designing a picture for the front of the card. There is a prize for the picture chosen. Leaflets are available in both porches, giving all the information about the competition. Entries need to be handed in to Pauline Payne by 8th November. We'd like lots of entries from St. Columba’s!
ST. COLUMBA’S PARISH DIRECTORY:
The Directory of Organisations and Contacts for our parish has recently been updated. Copies are available in each of the porches. The Directory will be regularly updated, so please let us know of any errors or omissions.
ST. PETERS CENTRE AT THE CROSS:
The church building is available for use by Christian organisations for a wide range of events such as services, exhibitions, meetings and concerts.The work of the Centre continues, with refreshments available during its normal opening hours of 10 am to 4pm from Monday to Saturday (except for Friday afternoon when lack of volunteers forces it to close). The great majority of the refreshments are from fair trade sources. If you would like to discuss using the Centre for any appropriate activity, or if you would like to become a volunteer steward, please contact David Savage on 380626.
CONCERT FOR CHRISTIAN AID:
“An Evening of Music for All Tastes” is being arranged by Christian Aid on Saturday, 31st October, 7.30 p.m. at Hamilton Street Methodist Church, Hoole. Favourite songs from stage and screen, plus popular classics and organ lollipops. Admission £6, including refreshments. Further details: 01244 674878.
