SPUC:

Abortion providers wish to advertise their services on TV & radio. SPUC is organising a Mini-petition against this move and leaflets will be available at St Columba’s on 14th/15th November. Each leaflet will take four signatures and we ask you and your family (over 18) to sign the petition urging the Prime Minister to oppose these adverts. Pens and leasflets will be in the porches together with boxes for completed leaflets. Thank you.

THE BOOK OF THE GOSPELS IN PARISH LITURGY:

The Gospel Reading during Mass is reverenced in a number of ways. All stand to acclaim and listen to it, and the priest/deacon seeks a blessing, that he “may worthily proclaim” it. The priest/deacon signs the Reading with the cross and all sign that the Gospel message may be “in my head, on my lips and in my heart”, and on special occasions the Reading may be incensed. Having read it, the priest/deacon reverences the Reading with a kiss, or presents it for the Bishop to do so if he presides.

A further sign of reverence is to use the Book of the Gospels, a book devoted to the Gospel Readings for the three-year cycle. The parish has acquired such a Book for use in our Mass celebrations. Beginning on the First Sunday of Advent, whenever the deacon serves at Mass, the Book will be carried aloft in the Entrance Procession to the Altar, and from the Altar to the Lectern for the Reading. After the Reading the Book will be displayed in a place of honour in the Sanctuary.

Thanks are due to the group of ladies of the parish whose skill and commitment have produced a set of embroidered covers for the Book, for use in each of the liturgical seasons, an additional sign of reverence.

We hope that this enhancement to our parish liturgy will help everyone to a full and active participation in the Mass.

FIRST SACRAMENTS ENROLMENT MASS:

On Sunday 22nd November, Feast of Christ the King, the children in our parish who are preparing to receive First Sacraments this school year will be enrolled at the 11.00 a.m. Mass. Please pray for the children and their families.

FEAST OF THE WEEK: ST HILDA OF WHITBY

Tuesday 17th November is the feast day of St. Hilda (614 - 680). She was born in Northumbria at a time of great missionary movements that followed in the wake of Augustine's arrival in England (597), highly influenced also by the work of the Irish monastic foundation at Lindisfarne. She became a nun at the age of 33 and was Abbess of Hartlepool before moving on to her main life's work, founding and developing Whitby Abbey as a very important seat of learning.
