ST. COLUMBA PASTORAL COUNCIL:

The AGM was held recently. The minutes are displayed on the notice board. A number of interesting matters were raised concerning social events, the Book of the Gospels, Gift Aid and others. The next meeting of the Council will be tomorrow, Monday 9thNovember.

THE BOOK OF THE GOSPELS IN PARISH LITURGY:

The Gospel Reading during Mass is reverenced in a number of ways. All stand to acclaim and listen to it, and the priest/deacon seeks a blessing, that he “may worthily proclaim” it. The priest/deacon signs the Reading with the cross and all sign that the Gospel message may be “in my head, on my lips and in my heart”, and on special occasions the Reading may be incensed. Having read it, the priest/deacon reverences the Reading with a kiss, or presents it for the Bishop to do so if he presides.

A further sign of reverence is to use the Book of the Gospels, a book devoted to the Gospel Readings for the three-year cycle. The parish has acquired such a Book for use in our Mass celebrations. Beginning on the First Sunday of Advent, whenever the deacon serves at Mass, the Book will be carried aloft in the Entrance Procession to the Altar, and from the Altar to the Lectern for the Reading. After the Reading the Book will be displayed in a place of honour in the Sanctuary.

Thanks are due to the group of ladies of the parish whose skill and commitment have produced a set of embroidered covers for the Book, for use in each of the liturgical seasons, an additional sign of reverence.

We hope that this enhancement to our parish liturgy will help everyone to a full and active participation in the Mass.
